Top 10 highest-paid jobs in French-speaking Switzerland: the 2026 figures

Geneva’s harbour and the Jet d’Eau seen from the lake, with the city and the Salève in the background.

How much do people really earn in the highest-paid jobs in French-speaking Switzerland? Not the salaries quoted on forums, but those the Federal Statistical Office measures every two years among tens of thousands of companies. This ranking is based on the 2024 Swiss Earnings Structure Survey, whose regional tables by occupation were published in spring 2026.

You will find the top 10 occupational groups by median wage in the Lake Geneva region, the comparison with Espace Mittelland and Switzerland, the best-paying industries, what drives pay up (education, management function, sex, bonuses), the bottom of the scale, and how to use these figures to negotiate. Every amount is sourced and we will update it at the next survey.

Where the figures come from

All the amounts in this article come from the 2024 Swiss Earnings Structure Survey (ESS) of the Federal Statistical Office (FSO), whose first results were published on 25 November 2025 and whose detailed tables by major region and occupation on 29 April 2026. To read them correctly:

  • A standardised gross monthly wage. The FSO converts all positions to a full-time equivalent of 40 hours per week, and includes in the gross figure one twelfth of the 13th salary and one twelfth of annual special payments (bonuses, premiums). A salary advertised “× 13” must therefore be converted before comparison.
  • The median, not the average. The value given is the one that splits positions in two: half earn more, half earn less. We also give the P90, the threshold exceeded by the 10% best paid in the group.
  • Occupational groups, not job titles. The FSO classifies positions according to the CH-ISCO-19 nomenclature into some forty two-digit groups, from “chief executive” to “domestic cleaner”. A group mixes neighbouring occupations; we give examples for each.
  • Two major regions for French-speaking Switzerland. The Lake Geneva region (Région lémanique) groups Geneva, Vaud and Valais. Espace Mittelland groups Fribourg, Neuchâtel and Jura with Bern and Solothurn. The FSO does not publish these tables by canton. The main ranking is that of the Lake Geneva region, the Espace Mittelland figures are given alongside.

Benchmarks: the 2024 median wage is CHF 6,998 in the Lake Geneva region, CHF 6,964 in Espace Mittelland and CHF 7,024 in Switzerland. The 10% best paid earn more than CHF 12,636 in the Lake Geneva region.

The top 10 highest-paid occupational groups in the Lake Geneva region (2024)

02

2. Administrative and commercial managers: CHF 10,308

Finance, human resources, marketing, sales and strategy directors. P90: CHF 21,227. Espace Mittelland: CHF 10,196, Switzerland: CHF 10,375. The support functions run from the corporate headquarters of the Lake Geneva area.

Software and application developers and analysts, database and network administrators. P90: CHF 14,364. Espace Mittelland: CHF 9,753, Switzerland: CHF 9,949. The first non-managerial group in the ranking, and the most homogeneous from one region to another.

05

5. Business administration professionals: CHF 9,632

Accountants, financial analysts, management consultants, human resources, marketing and sales specialists. P90: CHF 18,038. Espace Mittelland: CHF 8,745, Switzerland: CHF 9,509. A high P90: experienced finance and consulting profiles pull up the top of the group.

06

6. Teaching professionals: CHF 9,458

Secondary and primary school teachers, university and higher education lecturers, trainers. P90: CHF 12,944. Espace Mittelland: CHF 9,733, Switzerland: CHF 9,697. The only group in the top 10 where Espace Mittelland pays better than the Lake Geneva region.

07

7. Legal, social and cultural professionals: CHF 9,107

Lawyers, economists, psychologists, journalists, librarians, artists. P90: CHF 15,266. Espace Mittelland: CHF 8,895, Switzerland: CHF 9,122. A heterogeneous group, where law and economics weigh on the top of the distribution.

Civil, mechanical and electrical engineers, chemists, architects, physicists. P90: CHF 12,809. Espace Mittelland: CHF 8,576, Switzerland: CHF 8,730. Medians close everywhere in Switzerland: engineering is paid by the qualification, less by the location.

09

9. Health professionals: CHF 8,266

Doctors, pharmacists, registered nurses, physiotherapists, dentists. P90: CHF 12,987. Espace Mittelland: CHF 7,603, Switzerland: CHF 8,000. The Lake Geneva region pays better than the Swiss average, and the gap with Espace Mittelland exceeds CHF 650.

10

10. Business and administration associate professionals: CHF 7,980

Intermediate-level accountants, brokers and insurance agents, administrative managers, executive assistants. P90: CHF 13,693. Espace Mittelland: CHF 7,882, Switzerland: CHF 7,900. The only group in the top 10 most often reached through an apprenticeship and continuing education.

Just behind: science and engineering associate professionals (CHF 7,445), information and communications technicians (CHF 7,390) and legal and social associate professionals (CHF 7,266). Hospitality, retail and other services managers are at CHF 6,739: the title of manager is not enough, the industry counts.

The best-paying industries in French-speaking Switzerland

Same survey, different breakdown: the median by economic division, all occupations combined, and in brackets that of senior and middle managers.
01

Lake Geneva region: finance far ahead

Financial services CHF 12,182 (managers: 20,000), head office activities and management consultancy CHF 10,812 (15,958), telecommunications CHF 9,905 (16,965), activities auxiliary to financial services and insurance CHF 9,730 (17,855), IT activities CHF 9,524 (12,674).

02

Lake Geneva region: the rest of the ranking

Wholesale trade CHF 9,332 (managers: 19,000), scientific research and development CHF 8,934, chemical industry CHF 8,930 (17,085), insurance CHF 8,828, pharmaceutical industry CHF 8,782, energy production and distribution CHF 8,762, education CHF 8,707, public administration CHF 8,566.

03

Espace Mittelland: telecoms, insurance and administration

Telecommunications CHF 10,390, insurance CHF 9,596, public administration CHF 9,401, IT activities CHF 9,375, information services CHF 9,166, pharmaceutical industry CHF 9,123, financial services CHF 8,937, research and development CHF 8,862.

04

And at the very bottom, at Swiss level

Retail trade CHF 5,214, food and beverage services CHF 4,744, accommodation CHF 4,715, personal services CHF 4,496. In these industries, the same administrative or technical job is paid markedly less than in finance or pharma.

Reading: for the same occupation, the industry can shift the wage by several thousand francs. An accountant in a Geneva bank and an accountant in a hotel are not in the same league.

What drives pay up: education, function, sex, bonuses

The FSO tables make it possible to isolate the factors, here for the Lake Geneva region:
01

Education: CHF 5,159 to 10,402

Median by highest qualification: university or federal institute of technology CHF 10,402, university of applied sciences or teacher education CHF 8,465, higher vocational education and colleges CHF 8,483, apprenticeship (federal VET diploma) CHF 6,331, no completed vocational training CHF 5,159. A federal diploma or college qualification is worth almost as much as a university of applied sciences degree.

02

Management function: almost double

Senior and middle managers CHF 11,697, against CHF 6,378 without a management function. With a university degree, the gap runs from CHF 8,785 without a management function to CHF 14,815 with a leadership role. In French-speaking Switzerland, a supervisory responsibility weighs as much as the degree.

03

The P90: where the high salaries are

In the top 10, the threshold of the 10% best paid runs from CHF 12,809 (science and engineering) to CHF 22,899 (chief executives). For business administration professionals, it reaches CHF 18,038: experienced finance and consulting profiles, not the group median, reach these levels.

04

The gender gap persists at the top of the ranking

In the Lake Geneva region, the median for women is CHF 6,902 against CHF 7,052 for men, all occupations combined. Among chief executives and senior officials, CHF 10,196 against CHF 11,684; among ICT professionals, 9,498 against 9,852; among health professionals, 8,172 against 8,657. At Swiss level, the median gap is 8.4% in 2024, against 11.5% in 2018.

05

Bonuses: rare, but huge at the top

In Switzerland, 32.6% of employees received a bonus in 2024, with an average value of CHF 11,967. For senior managers, the average bonus runs from CHF 4,364 in public administration to CHF 58,747 in IT and CHF 147,796 in banks. Three employees in four receive a 13th salary: our guide to the 13th salary explains when it is owed.

To place yourself, you therefore need to cross four entries: occupational group, industry, education and function. The group median alone says little.

The bottom of the scale, to measure the gap

The same table gives the lowest-paid groups in the Lake Geneva region: food preparation assistants CHF 4,380, domestic and office cleaners CHF 4,410, agricultural labourers CHF 4,553, personal service workers CHF 4,848, sales workers CHF 4,850. Between the first and the last group in the ranking, the ratio is one to two and a half, on a full-time basis.

At Swiss level, the FSO sets the low-wage threshold at CHF 4,683 gross per month for full-time work in 2024; 10.8% of positions fall below it, mainly in personal services, accommodation and catering. If you are in one of these groups and looking for a way up, health, technical and supervisory occupations are those where recruiters lack candidates: see our top 10 most in-demand jobs and our guide to succeeding in your career change.

How to use these figures to negotiate

An FSO figure is worth more than an impression from a forum, provided you use it correctly:

  • Compare like with like. Take the median of your occupational group in your major region, then adjust for your education and your function. An ICT professional with a university of applied sciences degree and no management function is not comparable with the group’s P90.
  • Convert the 13th salary. FSO amounts include one twelfth of the 13th salary. A monthly salary offered “× 13” is multiplied by 13 and divided by 12 to be compared: CHF 7,000 × 13 corresponds to CHF 7,583 in FSO terms.
  • Aim for the quartile, not the median, if you have the experience. The median is the starting point for an average profile. With ten years of experience and responsibilities, the group’s P75 or P90 are legitimate references, available in the same FSO table.
  • Think in total remuneration. Bonus, 13th salary, employer’s pension contribution above the minimum, holiday days: our advice on negotiating your salary details what can be discussed beyond the gross monthly figure.

The Licorn method: your salary is set before the first exchange

On Licorn, the figure does not come at the end of the third interview:
01

You set your gross annual salary

With the benchmarks in this article, you state in your profile what you expect, 13th salary included. Only companies ready to pay it can contact you.

02

Targeted proposals

Recruiters come to you with a position and conditions that match your criteria: salary, location, workload, remote work. Licorn generates your CV from your profile.

03

Invisible to your employer

Your profile is hidden from your current employer. You can measure your value on the French-speaking market without risk, and capture opportunities without searching.
